Guide
PNG will not make a JPG look better
Converting cannot bring back detail that JPG compression already removed. The PNG is an exact copy of what the JPG shows, including any blocky patches or blur. What changes is that no further detail is lost from here on.
Expect the PNG to be much larger than the JPG, often three to five times for a photo, because PNG keeps every pixel exactly.
Good reasons to convert
- An upload form or app accepts PNG only.
- You are going to edit and save the image many times. Every JPG save loses a little more quality; PNG saves do not.
- You plan to cut out the background later in an editor, which needs a format that supports transparency.
Phone photos and rotation
Phones often save the picture sideways and add a note (an EXIF orientation tag) telling viewers to rotate it. Some programs ignore that note and show the photo on its side. This tool applies the rotation to the pixels, so the PNG is upright everywhere.
Camera details such as the location, date and phone model are not copied into the PNG.
Questions
- Why is the PNG so much bigger than my JPG?
- JPG throws away detail you are unlikely to notice in order to save space. PNG is lossless, so it stores everything, including the noise and artefacts in the photo. Larger files are normal.
- Will the PNG have a transparent background?
- No. A JPG has no transparency, so the PNG is fully opaque. Removing a background needs an image editor.
- Is the GPS location from my phone kept?
- No. Only the pixels are written to the PNG. Location, camera model and other EXIF data are left out.
- Do I lose quality by converting?
- No further quality is lost. The PNG stores exactly what the decoded JPG shows, after applying the rotation tag. Photos with a wide-colour (Display P3) profile are converted to standard sRGB colours.
- Is anything uploaded?
- No. Your browser does the conversion. The files never leave your device.
